After a courageous battle with cancer, Pete Don Lopez Sr., age 65, of San Angelo, Texas, peacefully joined his Lord and Savior on Friday, October 31, 2025, at Medical City Hospital in Dallas, Texas. He was born on September 23, 1960, in DeLeon, Texas, to the late John and Rita Lopez.
Pete attended Sonora High School, where he met his high school sweetheart, Brenda Swyter. They were married on September 16, 1983, in San Angelo, Texas, and their union blessed them with three beautiful children: Brandi, Robin, and Pete Jr. The couple later divorced in 1990.
Following several years of dedicated work in the oil field, Pete faced an injury that led to his retirement. He found joy in handyman work and devoted himself to helping others. With a deep-rooted faith in Jesus, he spread love and kindness to everyone he met. Pete took an active role in the lives of family and friends, enjoying activities such as fishing, playing bingo, gambling, and sharing his love for sports. A proud Dallas Cowboys fan, he had recently developed an affection for the Iowa Hawkeyes and Indian Fever. Known for his lively spirit, he relished political discussions and found true happiness in spending summers with his children and grandchild, especially his son. His infectious smile, contagious laugh, and delightful storytelling, along with his playful antics—like using a drill to make mashed potatoes—will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, John and Rita Lopez; his twin brother, Mike Lopez; both sets of grandparents; and several aunts and uncles. He is survived by his two daughters, Brandi Lopez of Vinton, IA, and Robin Lopez of Cedar Rapids, IA; his son, Pete Lopez Jr. of Fort Madison, IA; and his only grandchild, Destiny Lopez of Cedar Rapids, IA. Additionally, he leaves behind his sister, Mary Lopez of Sonora, TX; his brother, John (Betty) Lopez of Sonora, TX; his sister Josie (Fernando) Emiliano of Sonora, TX; his brother Arturo (Louise) Lopez of Palestine, TX; his cousin Juan Martinez of Lubbock, TX, who cared for him in his final months; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial visitation at Love Funeral Home, located at 409 SE St., Sonora, TX, on November 5th. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 6th, at 2:00 p.m. at the same location, followed by a burial service at Sutton County Cemetery.
