Henry Dewey Meyers

November 28, 1925 — April 28, 2018

On Saturday, April 28, Henry Dewey Meyers passed away at 92 years old. Always on a mission to draw out a smile, he often introduced himself as “Dewey, the middle duck,” in reference to the cartoon characters Huey, Dewey, and Louie.   Dewey was born in Nocona, Texas, in 1925 to Dora Spikes and Henry Meyers. Immediately after graduating Prairie Valley High School, Prairie Valley, Texas, at 17 years old, Dewey eagerly enlisted in the Navy with his parents’ signature of permission. He served as a radioman aboard the Troop Carrier USS LaGrange, which endured the last know kamikaze attacks of World War II, and was promoted to Petty Officer Third Class before he left the Navy in 1946.   In 1947, Dewey married Joyce Keck in Nocona. They were married for 24 years, resided primarily in Midland, Texas, and had two children, Sherry Meyers Berry of Katy, Texas, and Stacy Meyers Haynes of Eldorado, Texas. In 1971, Dewey married Carolyn Wolfe, in Andrews, Texas. They were married for 24 years, resided primarily in Odessa, Texas, and had two children, Tony Meyers of Des Plaines, Ill., and Lisa Meyers of Odessa. Dewey was later married to Alice Belew, from whom he was estranged at the time of his death. In the last few years before his passing, Dewey left Odessa and enjoyed living at Lake Brownwood, Texas, before moving to San Angelo, Texas, to be close to his son-in-law Mike Haynes. Dewey resided at Lyndale Senior Living, where he enjoyed decorating his apartment with natural objects he found while walking the grounds.   Hard work, family, and lots of fun characterized the life of Dewey Meyers. He retired from Armco Steel (formerly National Supply) after dedicating 31 years, then proceeded to work for City Pipe until his retirement from that company. Since Dewey had such a hard time with retirement, he then worked for JS Sales until the age of 90. Dewey loved to say, “The family that plays together, stays together,” and he found his greatest joy in life while playing sports, camping, fishing, riding motorcycles, square dancing, Western dancing, listening to country Western music, and watching the Dallas Cowboys with his beloved family, as well as close friends. Dewey was always active in clubs such as the VFW, American Legion, Chuck Wagon Gang of Odessa, IOOF Lodge of Snyder, Boy Scouts of America (master leader) and Oil Patch Scouts camping club. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Andrews and the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Odessa.   Dewey was preceded in death by his daughter, Stacy. He is survived by his three remaining children; his five grandchildren, Mindy Haynes Sellers, Tanner Haynes, Bryne Berry, Bayli Berry, and Zach Meyers; and his four great-grandchildren, Milo Sellers, Ailee Haynes, Summer Haynes, and Joleen Haynes. He is also survived by his sister, Anna Scruggs of Austin, Texas, and his brothers Bill Meyers of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Jerry Meyers of Arlington, Texas.   Services for Dewey will be held at the chapel at the Eldorado Cemetery on Tuesday, May 1,2018 at 11 am, under the direction of Love Funeral Home of Eldorado.
