Harold "Corky" Schwiening

August 21, 1934 — July 4, 2017

Harold “Corky” Schwiening, Jr was born in Junction, Texas on August 21, 1934. On July 4, 2017, he passed peacefully in his ranch home with his daughter and her husband by his side. He grew up on a ranch in Sutton County and attended Cedar Hill School on the Llano River near Camp Allison. During these years he rode his horse to school every morning. When he was 10, his family relocated to Sonora where he would finish out his school years. He was preceded in death by Patsy Gandre Schwiening, the love of his life, and his parents Harold and Elsie Schwiening. His surviving loved ones include: his daughter Susan and her husband Jimmy Crowder of Roosevelt, Texas and Charlotte Luna of Sonora, Texas, a sister Barbara Halbert of Pensacola, Florida. Other survivors include his grandchildren: Janea Crowder and husband Bill Clinger of Sonora, Texas, Kimble and Cash Lane of Canyon Lake, Texas, Harold Luna of Roosevelt, Texas and Christopher Crowder. Finally, he has three great-grandchildren James and Makenna Shaffer of Sonora, Texas and Colton Crowder of San Angelo, Texas. Corky and Patsy both attended Texas Tech University at Lubbock, Texas. Corky graduated in 1957 with a degree in Animal Science, which he applied to his career as a rancher. Shortly after college Corky served his country by joining the Army and was stationed in Alabama. He was a member of the St. Johns Episcopal Church in Sonora, where he served on the vestry multiple times. In addition, he served as junior and senior warden. Corky’s hobbies included: hunting, fishing, and following the Sonora Bronco football team. He also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. An important part of Corky’s life was breeding registered goats for his daughters to exhibit in major livestock shows. Frequently, his goats would bring home grand champion honors. Corky dedicated his free time to coaching his daughter’s wool and mohair judging team. Corky’s last few years were spent at his ranch enjoying what he loved to do. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends. Services will be held on Friday, July 7, 2017, at 10:00 am at the Sonora Cemetery. The service will be officiated by The Reverend Monte Jones. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be sent to The Wounded Warrior Project and the Boys Ranch and Girls Home of San Angelo. Online condolences may be made at lovefuneralhome.net.
